Chapter 3: The Cairn — Backbone

Section 1: The Warning

Anchor: Approaching Rune Hold. A traveler's dread.

Beats

  1. Approaching Rune Hold. Passing traveler startled by their state — bloody, bruised, exhausted.
  2. He warns them about what awaits in the once-famous village. They press on anyway.

Section 2: The Wall

Anchor: Elite Guard. Outmatched.

Beats

  1. They walk into the village. The Elite Guard trio already waiting — like they knew.
  2. The Guards talk down to them. Outcome already decided in their eyes.
  3. Reality hits. Hours of combat, mana burned through. Kael worst of all.
  4. They're outmatched. This isn't a fight they can win.

Section 3: The Escape

Anchor: Quick thinking. Survival.

Beats

  1. Veyra's instincts kick in — throws up a firewall, yells "Mist!"
  2. Sam reacts instantly. Last of her water — blocks and blinds.
  3. They bolt. Duck into a random shop.

Section 4: Gregory

Anchor: The gate opens. Safety.

Beats

  1. Meet Gregory. He reads the situation in seconds.
  2. Flips the shop sign to CLOSED. No questions. Opens a gate.
  3. They step through.

Section 5: The Shimmer Garden

Anchor: Ather pocket. Recovery.

Beats

  1. The Shimmer Garden — Gregory's home away from home inside the Ather.
  2. Tease the space: Eden aesthetic, high mana concentration, peaceful.
  3. They rest. By morning, they feel brand new — the Ather's preservative effects.

Section 6: The Passage

Anchor: Hidden infrastructure. A new path.

Beats

  1. Next day. Gregory opens another gate — doesn't lead back to the shop.
  2. The other side: The Passage. Tunnel market under the mountain.
  3. Merchants, vendors, hidden life beneath Rune Hold. The town's true heart.
  4. They explore. Find a change of clothes. Blend in.

Section 7: The Message

Anchor: A nudge from unseen hands.

Beats

  1. Exit on the far side of the mountain.
  2. A messenger waiting for them. (Sent by Eyuun — they don't know yet. They'll catch on later that he has his ways.)
  3. The message: "If you want to keep getting stronger, there's a place to test yourself. The Moldy Boulder."
  4. Kael's keen — just got humiliated, needs this.
  5. Veyra and Sam can't stop him. They follow.

Section 8: The Ascent

Anchor: Mountain passes. Eyes in the dark.

Beats

  1. Travel up the mountain passes toward the Moldy Boulder.
  2. The whole time, feeling watched. (Cairn scouts — Klaus knows they're coming.)

Section 9: The Entrance

Anchor: A shabby tavern. A hidden world.

Beats

  1. Reach the Moldy Boulder. Shabby tavern. Looks like a joke.
  2. Talk to the barkeep for a while. He sizes them up.
  3. He walks to a bookshelf, touches the side. It activates.
  4. The shelf slides open — long dark hallway, bright light at the end.
  5. "Welcome to the Cairn." END CHAPTER.

Chapter 4 Setup

Inside the Cairn. Klaus and the Four Generals. Real training begins — not technique, but philosophy. They entered as survivors. They'll leave as soldiers.
