The Ather — The Dream Realm
CANON — Cosmology & Spirit Lore
What Is The Ather?
A dimension parallel to Athernyx. Beautiful. Peaceful. Eden before the exile.
| Aspect | Description |
|---|---|
| Landscape | Soft prairies, fields of flowers, nature calm and tended |
| Feel | No struggle, no competition, everything belongs |
| Time | Moves differently — patience is infinite |
| Inhabitants | Spirits — ancient beings who predate the Alkin |
The flowers don't compete for sunlight. The fields don't choke each other. Nothing needs to fight to survive. It simply is.
Spirits — The Elder Race
Spirits are the native inhabitants of the Ather. They are older than the Alkin by unknowable ages.
Nature of Spirits
| Trait | Description |
|---|---|
| Origin | Unknown — they simply are, have always been |
| Need | Nothing — self-sustaining, content |
| Society | Communal, communicative, complex |
| Portal Ability | Cannot create portals — rooted to the Ather |
| Patience | Infinite — time means nothing to them |
Spirits are whole. Complete. They live in communities, communicate amongst themselves, and exist in a state of perfect contentment.
What Spirits Are NOT
- Not servants or summons
- Not mindless energy
- Not dangerous or hostile
- Not bound by Alkin understanding
Spirits and the Alkin
The Alkin don't know spirits exist. They've never seen the Ather. The door has been closed to them — until Eyuun.
Some spirits chose to help Eyuun. Why? Unknown. Perhaps curiosity. Perhaps compassion. Perhaps something spirits understand that Alkin cannot.
One spirit waits in a scroll, coiled in darkness for centuries, holding a golden key.
Mana'mals — The Fallen Kin
Mana'mals are descendants of spirits who mutated.
The Origin Story
Long ago — before the Alkin existed — some spirits felt something new: curiosity.
What lies beyond the Ather?
That question pulled them toward the edges. And the reaching changed them.
The Trade (Not a Fall)
| What They Lost | What They Gained |
|---|---|
| Stillness | Motion |
| Community | Solitude |
| Complexity | Instinct |
| Contentment | Hunger |
| Rootedness | Portal ability |
It wasn't punishment. It was a trade.
Spirits cannot create portals — they're bound to the Ather. But the mutation gave Mana'mals something spirits never had: the ability to slip between worlds.
Curiosity unlocked what contentment never needed.
Mana'mals on Athernyx
Mana'mals came to Athernyx to feed.
What They Eat
- Network flora — the fungal vegetation
- Mana-rich fruits and shrooms
- The golden particles that fall from the rings
The Network is their food source. They graze on it like deer graze on grass.
The Spectrum
Not all Mana'mals are the same. Centuries of existence created a spectrum:
| Type | Ather Connection | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Hoppers | Strong | Still skilled at portal-hopping, can return to Ather to feed |
| Integrated | Faint | Lost the ability, fully grounded, stranded on Athernyx |
Hoppers are harder to catch — they can vanish back to the Ather when threatened. Integrated are trapped — more desperate, more common, easier to hunt but more tragic.
How to Tell the Difference
- Hoppers: Edges blur slightly, shimmer strongly, may phase when startled
- Integrated: Fully solid, Ather marks are faint echoes, cannot escape
The Oldest Heretics
Mana'mals are the first heretics.
Long before Eyuun watched them and asked "where do they go?" — their ancestors asked the same question about the world beyond the Ather. And paid for the answer.
This creates thematic resonance:
| Being | Question | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Mana'mal Ancestors | "What lies beyond the Ather?" | Their wholeness |
| Eyuun | "Where do Mana'mals go?" | His name and legacy |
| Kael | ??? | ??? |
The Ather doesn't punish curiosity. It just lets you trade for it.
Eyuun's Discovery
Eyuun was the first Alkin to notice what others dismissed.
Mana'mals weren't vanishing. They were going home.
He followed the question. Studied their patterns. And eventually created the first and only doorway into the Ather.
When he fled the Citadel in Year 333, he entrusted a spirit with the key — sealed it in a scroll that has waited for 267 years.
When Kael unrolls that scroll in Chapter 2, something older than his entire species looks back at him.
The Ather and The Network
Are they connected?
The Network spans all of Athernyx — fungal roots linking everything underground. It moves mana, stores memory, pulses with slow awareness.
The Ather... is something else. Parallel. Adjacent. The Network may sense it — or may be completely unaware.
Open question: Did the Ather exist before Athernyx? Did Athernyx grow from something the Ather seeded? Or are they simply two realms that occasionally touch?
Visual Language
The Ather Itself
- Soft light, no harsh shadows
- Fields that stretch forever
- Colors: warm golds, soft greens, peaceful blues
- Flowers that don't compete, grass that doesn't overgrow
- Tended — but by whom?
Pure Spirits
- Translucent, particle-woven
- Made of light and mana threads
- Not quite physical
- Eyes that hold impossible depth
- (See: Shimmer_sprite_001.jpg, Shimmer_sprite_002.jpg)
Mana'mals
- Solid but shimmer-touched
- Ather marks visible (glow veins, translucent patches)
- Eyes still carry the light
- More animal-like in behavior
- Echoes of what they once were
What The Alkin Don't Know
- The Ather exists
- Spirits exist
- Mana'mals came from somewhere
- The Network may be connected to something larger
- There's a door — and Eyuun has the key
The entire cosmology is hidden from them. They think Mana'mals are just strange wildlife. They think the Network is just plants. They have no idea what they're missing.
Until Kael finds the scroll.
Curiosity — The Through-Line
The Ather is beautiful. Peaceful. Perfect.
And yet — some spirits wondered what else existed. That wondering changed them forever.
Curiosity is not a sin in Athernyx. It's just... expensive.
"The Ather doesn't punish curiosity. It just lets you trade for it."
"They came from peace. They traded it for questions. And now they graze on a world that will never be home."
