Flora of Athernyx
CANON — The Network's Surface
The Core Truth
All "plant" life on Athernyx evolved from fungal ancestors. What looks like trees, grass, flowers — all connected beneath the surface by the Network.
They LOOK like plants. They ARE fungi. Everything is one organism.

What Makes It "Athernyx"
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Canopies | Bulbous, bubble-like, cap structures — NOT flat leaves |
| Trunks | Smooth with gill-ridges, NOT bark texture |
| Bioluminescence | Veins glow, edges glow, especially at dusk/night |
| Color Palette | Jade green, teal, deep purple, cyan accents, pink/magenta highlights |
| Undergrowth | Smaller fungi, shelf mushrooms, soft spongy ground |
| Connection | Roots visible breaking surface — veins linking trees |
Day vs Night
| Time | Look |
|---|---|
| Day | Jade green dominant, alien but not overwhelming, could almost pass for normal forest |
| Dusk | Bioluminescence begins, edges start glowing, colors shift to teal/purple |
| Night | Full glow — veins pulse, canopies luminescent, magical but silent |
Flora by Biome
Eastern Frontier (Ashfeld, Helga's Cabin)
Vibe: Dense, overgrown, ancient
- Thick canopy blocks most light
- Heavy undergrowth — spongy floor
- Bioluminescence strong (high mana concentration)
- Network roots often visible
- Silent — no animals, just the hum of the Network
Dominant Flora:
- Tall bubble-cap trees
- Shelf fungi climbing trunks
- Luminescent vines
- Spore-releasing clusters
The Valkara (Mountains)
Vibe: Sparse, hardy, wind-sculpted
- Trees shorter, twisted by wind
- Caps more flat/umbrella-like (wind resistance)
- Less bioluminescence (lower mana concentration)
- Rocky ground, roots grip stone
- Snow at peaks — flora retreats below treeline
Dominant Flora:
- Low umbrella-trees
- Lichen-like network growth on rocks
- Hardy ground fungi
- Minimal undergrowth
Gale Haven (Northwest Coast)
Vibe: Windswept, salt-touched, maritime
- Trees lean inland (constant sea wind)
- Caps have tougher membranes
- Moderate bioluminescence
- Mixes with coastal grasses (also network-connected)
Dominant Flora:
- Leaning cap-trees
- Coastal ground cover
- Salt-resistant shelf fungi
- Driftwood-like fallen network matter
Veradyn (Tropical Islands)
Vibe: Lush, vibrant, alive
- Largest trees, most variety
- Heavy bioluminescence (ring particles concentrate here)
- Living architecture blends with flora
- Pink/magenta accents strongest here
- The most "alien" looking region
Dominant Flora:
- Massive multi-cap trees
- Hanging luminescent vines
- Flowering fungi (bright colors)
- Network roots form natural bridges
Citadel Territory (South)
Vibe: Cultivated, controlled, trimmed
- Flora managed by Alkin
- Less wild, more "gardened"
- Bioluminescence suppressed in city (too bright for sleep)
- Outside walls: Mediterranean-style network groves
Dominant Flora:
- Orchard-style cap-trees (farmed)
- Trimmed undergrowth
- Decorative fungi in gardens
- Network channeled through irrigation
Specific Flora Types
Trees (Canopy Layer)
| Name | Shape | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bubble-cap | Clustered spherical caps | Tall (15-25m) | Most common, dense forests |
| Umbrella-tree | Flat wide cap | Medium (8-15m) | Open areas, mountains |
| Veil-tree | Hanging membrane canopy | Tall (20-30m) | Veradyn, dramatic |
| Shelf-tower | Stacked horizontal caps | Very tall (30m+) | Ancient, rare |
Undergrowth
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Gill-grass | Soft blades with gill-ridges, covers forest floor |
| Puff clusters | Release spores when disturbed, used in Alchemy |
| Glow-moss | Bioluminescent ground cover, marks paths at night |
| Shelf fungi | Climb tree trunks, layered, harvestable |
Special
| Name | Description | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Heartroot | Massive exposed root node, network hub | Deep forest, sacred |
| Spire fungi | Tall thin spires, mark high-mana areas | Throughout |
| Bloom-cap | Flowering fungal tree, releases colored spores | Veradyn |
The Network Visible
The connection between trees is sometimes visible:
- Root bridges: Where network breaks surface, connecting trees
- Vein lines: Glowing channels in the ground at night
- Pulse events: Rare — whole sections of forest glow in sequence, like a heartbeat
Flora in Alchemy
| Ingredient | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Puff spores | Puff clusters | Base for many potions |
| Shelf slices | Shelf fungi | Spirit infusion ingredient |
| Glow-moss | Ground cover | Mana potions |
| Cap membrane | Fallen canopy pieces | Health potions |
| Heartroot sap | Heartroot (rare) | Legendary ingredients |
