The Cairn

The Cairn — Hidden Earth School

CANON — The Fortress in the Mountain

Overview

A secret military academy hidden inside a mountain east of Rune Hold. What looks like a hermit's tavern conceals a castle complex where lost mages train in peace, waiting for a world that might need them.

Location

AspectDetail
RegionEast side of the mountain near Rune Hold
TerrainDesolate, wind-scoured, easy to overlook
CoverThe Moldy Boulder — a tavern selling rocks
AccessSecret entrance behind a bookshelf
InteriorAncient castle complex carved into the mountain

The castle predates whoever built it. Niklaus didn't construct the Cairn — he discovered it. Ancient stonework, libraries of earth rune theory, chambers that were waiting to be filled.

The Moldy Boulder

The front. A tavern that isn't really a tavern.

AspectDetail
AppearanceRun-down, forgettable, middle of nowhere
ProprietorOne of Klaus's people posing as a hermit
WaresRocks. Some with mold. Hence the name.
CustomersRare. Travelers seeking shelter, occasionally.
SecretBookshelf hides the entrance. Feel the draft.

The hermit act is convincing. Anyone who stops by sees an eccentric old man selling worthless stones. They leave. They don't come back. That's the point.

The Founder

Niklaus "The Fortress" Klaus

FieldDetail
Former RoleLazerin's original protector — before Seren, Cade, and Wren
Title"The Fortress" — earned, not given
Defection~20 years ago (Year ~580)
Breaking PointOrdered to destroy a village on a whim. Refused. Walked.
Current RoleCommander of the Cairn

The Path:

He was Lazerin's wall. The man who stood between the tyrant and everything else. For years, he walked the path laid before him. Did things that can't be taken back.

Then Lazerin ordered him to demolish a village. Not for strategy. Not for security. On a whim.

Klaus refused. And kept walking.

He wandered the continent. Ended up in the mountains. Found an empty tavern in the middle of nowhere. Felt a draft. Moved the bookshelf.

The castle was waiting.

The Forgotten Man:

Seren, Cade, and Wren took his place. Within a few years, they forgot him entirely. The original Fortress — erased from memory, building something new in the shadows.

Personality:

Patient. Watchful. Speaks when words matter. Twenty years of collecting lost souls has taught him that everyone arrives broken. His job is giving them something to build toward.

Still carries guilt for what he did in Lazerin's service. The Cairn is penance as much as purpose.

Structure

LevelPopulation
CommanderNiklaus Klaus
Generals4
Task Forces4 (10 mages each)
CiviliansWomen, children, non-combatants
Total Fighters~44 trained mages

Functions like a military camp — but voluntary. A well-oiled machine built on choice, not conscription.

The Four Generals

Tor "The Boulder"

FieldDetail
TechniqueEarth Boulder — massive stone he controls like a mobile shield

PersonalitySteady. Unshakable. Short sentences. The one everyone trusts.

RoleRanged offense. Area denial. Punishes static targets.
PersonalityHot-tempered. Grins when fighting. The chaos element.
BackgroundRan with bandits. Burned his way out when they crossed a line. Klaus found him half-dead.
BuildLean, wiry. Burn scars on hands from early lack of control. Doesn't hide them.

Quake

FieldDetail
TechniqueLaunch & Impact — rockets skyward using earth beneath, compacts for devastating landing
RoleShock assault. Breaks formations. Lands where you don't expect.
PersonalityFearless. Laughs on the way up. Volunteers for suicide runs. Survives.
BackgroundFrontier family. Village razed by Citadel. Only survivor. Found the Cairn at sixteen.
BuildAthletic, compact. Built for impact. Short hair, practical.
AgeMid-twenties now

Marsh

PersonalityPatient. Watches everything. The strategist. Klaus's unofficial second.
BackgroundEx-Citadel soldier. Low rank. Deserted when ordered to execute prisoners. Found the Cairn eight years ago.

Team Dynamics

PairRelationship
Tor + MarshDefense brothers. Tor moves, Marsh holds. Seamless.
Cinder + QuakeChaos siblings. She launches, he rains fire. Terrifying.
Tor + CinderTor thinks Cinder is reckless. He's right. Cinder doesn't care.

  • Tor repositions mobile cover
  • Cinder pressures from range
  • Quake breaks formations from above

Philosophy

CQC Is Essential

"If you haven't learned close quarters combat, the enemy won't even have to try. If you have a sharper strategy, you have a better chance of winning. It's just as important as the weapon you carry."

The Cairn doesn't produce one-trick mages. They produce fighters.

TrainingPurpose
CQCSurvive when mana fails, fight in close, win ugly
StrategyOutthink, not just outpower. Positioning wins.
Team tacticsCover weaknesses, amplify strengths. Fight as unit.
Mana-techKlaus has been collecting weapons. Keep up with the times.

Defense-Ready, Not Aggressive

In a world of chaos, the Cairn grants peace. But they don't forget what's outside.

They're not rebels plotting revolution. They're survivors building capability. If the world needs them, they'll be ready. Until then, they train.

The Knowledge

What they found in the castle:

ContentDetail
TypeResearch on earth-related rune theory
EraPre-Dying, possibly older
FormatRecorded techniques, training methods
SignificanceEnough to continue the Earth School legacy

Not ancient Architect secrets. Not Temple mysteries. Just solid research — the accumulated knowledge of earth mages who came before. Practical. Teachable. Enough to build an army on.

Year 600 Status

AspectState
Known to CitadelNo
Known to Rune HoldNo (including Gregory)
Operational20 years running
Threat levelZero — because no one knows they exist

Gregory tinkers in his shop. Klaus trains in his mountain. Neither knows the other exists. Both serve the same cause without coordination.

Story Function

The Training Arc

Kael, Veyra, and Samantha arrive beaten, humbled. The Cairn provides:

  • Rest — Safety to recover from the Elite Guard encounter
  • Training — CQC, team tactics, mana-tech warfare
  • Growth — The skills they were missing
  • Time — Several weeks to transform

The Contrast

The Elite Guards (Seren, Cade, Wren) serve Lazerin for self-interest.

The Cairn serves something else — each other, the knowledge, the possibility of a better world.

Klaus is what the three could have been if they'd walked away.

The Irony

Lazerin's original Fortress now trains the people who will tear down his walls.

Key Scenes

Discovery: Team escapes through the Passage, hears rumors of a school on the east mountain. Finds the Moldy Boulder. The "hermit" sizes them up. Shows them the bookshelf.

Meeting Klaus: He doesn't explain himself. Doesn't ask for their story. Just says: "You can stay. You can train. When you're ready, you leave."

The Training Montage: Weeks of CQC drills, tactical exercises, learning to fight as a unit. Each of them struggles with different lessons:

  • Kael: Fighting with people, not around them
  • Veyra: Being more than just offense
  • Samantha: Combat healing under pressure

The Return: They leave the Cairn transformed. Travelers warn them away from Rune Hold. They go anyway.

"The mountain keeps its secrets. Some of them are waiting to be found."
